Samsung Galaxy Note Review

By posted on April 22, 2014 5:57PM

Samsung has launched the Galaxy Note a few months back and now,we have got this device in our hands and we are currently reviewing it for all of you guys.Anyway, this device is something which lies some where between a smartphone and a tablet,so what it is? You will find it just read on.So,Let’s start the review.

 What’s in the box:

  • Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000
  • USB Cable
  • User Manuals
  • Warranty
  • Ear phones
  • Ear Tips
  • Samsung Galaxy Note flip cover
  • Charger

Design and Build:

Samsung Galaxy Note is a huge device as it is having a 5.3-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen which is 800 x 1280 pixels in resolution and is having nearly 285 ppi pixel density, this is a Corning Gorilla glass which can’t broke easily and is also scratch resistant.Samsung Galaxy Note’s design is quite similar to Samsung Galaxy S II,difference between the designs of these devices are that the edges of Samsung Galaxy Note are curvier,I think that if we will stretch the Samsung Galaxy S II then it will become Galaxy S II.The design is quite attractive and good,at the bottom of the screen there is a push button present between the two capacitive touch buttons. On the top front there is your ear piece above the Samsung logo and the front facing camera is present beside it.   Build quality of Samsung Galaxy Note is very good and it’s a very solid device and it feels solid when we place the device on our palm.Samsung Galaxy Note is a huge device and it’s impressive that it’s very thin. This device is a little heavy than Galaxy S II but that’s okay,it weighs about 178 grams.I’ve also dropped the Samsung Galaxy Note a few times and found that the device is not damaged,as Galaxy Note is made of plastic and Metal so the build quality of this phone is very impressive.

Display,Touch Response,UI and OS:

Samsung Galaxy Note has a 5.3-inch screen and I’ve already told you all the details about it’s display but there are a lot of things to talk about this display. The display screen is very bright and if we do not decrease the brightness level then the battery life decreases. You can adjust the brightness but still, the screen is too bright.Anyway, the touch response of Samsung Galaxy Note is excellent,it’s a capacitive touchscreen and works very well, you will not find any trouble while scrolling or doing such things. 3 Samsung Galaxy Note is having TouchWiz 4.0 user interface which is decent but this TouchWiz UI will destroy all the good look once your device is updated to Android Ice Cream Sandwich.Anyway,Samsung Galaxy Note is running on Android 2.3.5 operating system and you can update this device to Android Ice Cream Sandwich as well. The Android UI is very nice, just like the other Android UI’s.The UI is easy to use and we do not find any kind of issue in this segment except the brightness.

Samsung Galaxy Note comes with a Stylus which is known as S-Pen,The S-Pen uses the same Wacom technology that graphic designers and architects use with their Bamboo writing tools for the computer. This stylus has a secondary button that activates gestures and actions exclusive to the Galaxy Note. There is a button present on the S-Pen and if you do not want to use your finger just tap that button for once and it will work as your finger.S-Pen do not need any kind of cells and it’s a very unique thing that comes with Samsung Galaxy Note.   S-Pen can do a lot of things with the S-Pen you can draw, write or even can construct and send your ideas in the form of drawing via a mail. One of our favorites is the ability to tap and hold to capture an instant screenshot, which is then immediately opened up in an image editor. There you can mark up the grab, circling elements, signing documents, making doodles whatever you want to do, really. From there you can send it on to social media sites, email addresses or save it on the device. Samsung Galaxy Note comes with some integrated note apps and one of the app I’ve used while writing the note(see above) is the S-Memo which is a cool application. When you open the application you will find different kind of pages and you can write and draw on them, this application actually collects your quick memos and provides a platform for creating longer form notes. You can also do a lot of other things with the S-Pen Stylus,so,overall S-Pen is a really handy equipment and do not dare to call it a Stylus,it’s something more than a Stylus.

 Messaging and QWERTY Keyboard:

Samsung Galaxy Note is a having a huge screen so,there is no issue while typing a message or an email. It will difficult for your to type only if your hands are too small but do not worry you will be able to use the keyboard in the portrait mode. Samsung Galaxy Note’s keyboard can be used in both landscape and portrait mode, also if you do not want to type then, you can also use the Google Voice app which will catch your wordings and then it will write. Also, you can download an application named Evi which works very similarly to the Siri. Anyway, the QWERTY keyboard is large, keys are having a lot of space between them,so there is no issue while typing and also the messaging application is very straight forward as there are no folders like Inbox,Sent now.

Camera and Speakers:

Samsung Galaxy Note has both rear and front cameras. On the back of the device there is an 8 MP AF camera which can capture good quality still images and can also shoot 1080p HD videos at 30fps.The camera includes other features like Geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, image stabilization etc. A LED flash is also present on the back of the Galaxy Note and the LED flash is very powerful. With this LED flash you can capture good quality images in a complete dark room. Samsung Galaxy Note shoots very good quality videos and it takes good image also. There is an issue with this camera, the camera takes images slowly as compared to the other Android devices. It takes 5-7 seconds for this camera to capture an image but other wise the 8 Megapixel camera is completely satisfactory. On the front of the device there is a 2 Megapixel camera for video calling and this camera is also good, the person present on the other side can see you very clearly.

At the bottom of the back panel, there is the speaker present and this speaker is quite powerful and it provides good quality sounds and music. If you are an ultimate music listener or if you do listen music often, then you will not regret after buying this phone, this phone can play a variety of music files.Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Note satisfies us in this section.

Browser,Processor and Connectivity features:

Samsung Galaxy Note is an Android device and uses the Android Web Browser. The web browser has a little issues. When you will open any website there will be no issue but once the website is loaded the phone brings some issue while zooming in/out.Also,there are some issues while kinetic scrolling, the issue is that whenever you will try do zoom in/out/kinetic scrolling then the checker board patterns will appear behind the loaded website and it’s really disgusting.

The browser of Samsung Galaxy Note is quite simple to use and it feels very good while surfing net using this web browser as the browser grabs all your screen and there are not buttons except the bookmark button present on the top. Overall, the web browser has some pros and cons.Samsung Galaxy Note is a 3G device and has connectivity features like Bluetooth,Wi-Fi,USB port and a 3.5mm AV jack. All these connectivity features work well.

Samsung Galaxy Note packs a Dual-core 1.4 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor along with Mali-400MP GPU.The processor is quite good and Samsung Galaxy Note scores 3595 in the benchmark test. You can play HD Games on this device very smoothly, the thing that I like about this phone is that the phone do not hangs and that’s only because of this processor.

Samsung Galaxy Note can play different kind of videos and music formats including MP4/ DivX/ XviD/ WMV/ H.264/ H.263  player and MP3/WAV/eAAC+/AC3/FLAC file formats respectively. You can also add the NFC connectivity feature on this device but that’s optional.A 2500 mAh battery provides power to this phone but the battery life is not very satisfactory. It also includes Accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, barometer sensors. The call quality of the phone is good and you will not hear any kind of hollow sound while calling some one.

The Verdict:

Samsung Galaxy Note is a really good device and summing all these sections up we are giving Samsung Galaxy Note a score of 4.5/5.Samsung Galaxy Note is priced at Rs. 32,000 here in India and if you are looking forward to buy an Android device which falls in this price range then do pick up this device as after purchasing this device you will not have any need to buy a tablet. So,there you go guys that was the complete review of Samsung Galaxy Note,we have also got a review video for you guys and you watch the video right below.Do not forget to check our image gallery below the video for more images, stay tuned for more tech updates here at Gadgetgyaan.
