By posted on April 22, 2014 6:08PM

Nokia has announced and launched their first ever Windows Phone named Nokia Lumia 800 at the Nokia World 2011 and a few weeks back we have got this device from the folks over at Nokia Connects,so,we are thankful to them for sending us this device for two weeks and in the meanwhile we have completely checked the Lumia 800 and is currently up for review. So,let’s begin.

 What’s in the box:

  • Nokia Lumia 800
  • Head phones
  • Charger(Micro USB based)
  • Datacable
  • User Manuals
  • Protective cover for Lumia 800
  • Warranty

Design and Build:

Nokia Lumia 800 looks very similar to the Nokia N9 in design.Nokia Lumia 800 has a very slime and user friendly design and the company has designed it in such a way that every one can hold this phone easily. You will not face any kind of trouble even if,you have got a small/large hand. It’s a little disappointing for every one to know that it’s design is similar to N9 as before the launch of this device every one has expected that the Nokia Lumia 800 will have a new kind of design but the company has disappointed us.The Corning Gorilla Glass display covers most part of the device and also the back of this device is absolutely plain.

If now I talk about the build quality of Lumia 800,I found that the build quality is extremely good and the device is not too heavy,it weighs about 142gm and that’s a little heavy as compared to the Samsung Galaxy Note which has a 5.3-inch screen and weighs less than the Lumia 800.There are no problems with the build quality and design. If we drop the phone from a selected level then we find that the device do not break and if even the corner of the device are not turned or get dented.Overall,Nokia Lumia 800 has impressed us in this segment.

Display,Touch Response,UI and OS:

Nokia Lumia 800 has a 3.7-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen which is 480 x 800 pixels in resolution having nearly 252 ppi pixel density along with 16M colors. The display of this device is very glossy and the screen shines whenever it’s near a light source. There is a disadvantage also, the display screen is quite bright which is good but this amount of brightness eats up the battery very quickly. The 3.7-inch screen covers the most part of the device on the front and at the bottom front there are three capacitive touch buttons which are back, home and search respectively.

Touch Response of this device is superb and you will not find any lag in the touch response, whenever you will place the finger on the screen, the screen will automatically glow up if the device is not locked. There’s a lot more discuss of this display as the Corning Gorilla Glass has done a great job here. This Gorilla Glass saves your device’s screen from breaking, getting a scratch and also this screen is not a finger print magnet. If you rub the Nokia Lumia 800 hardly against a wall even then you will find that the screen do not get any scratch and also you will find that wall’s color has not attached with you Lumia 800.

Nokia Lumia 800 is running on Windows Mango operating system and for the first time I’ve ever checked the Windows Phone operating system and I found that this operating system is great.Still there are some lags in some segments and we believe that Microsoft will fill all those blank spaces with something and will make it so good that it can stand up against Android and iOS.When you switch on the phone the device will show the home screen and at the home screen their are live tiles present which automatically changes. You place connect the Lumia 800 with your Facebook or Twitter account and when you are done the Live Tiles will automatically flip and will show the pics of your friend in very small pieces of tiles.

At the lower end of this home screen you will find that you profile pic is showing up and images are constantly replacing. When you will tap the right arrow button on the screen then you will move toward a new screen which will show you all the apps and settings. From there you can customize your phone and also, there you have to just pull up and pull down the screen, you can’t swipe. The User Interface of this phone is quite good and user friendly,it’s also easy to use.Overall, Windows Mango operating system is quite satisfactory and we found that Lumia 800 scores very well in this segment once,we have summed it up.

Messaging and QWERTY Keyboard:

Nokia Lumia 800 has a 3.7-inch screen and still you guys will find some trouble while typing. The keyboard can be used in both portrait and landscape mode. When you use the phone in portrait mode then their are no issues but most of you will find it difficult to type in the portrait mode and when you will turn the device to switch the keyboard to landscape mode then you will be disappointed as the QWERTY keyboard in the landscape mode do not use the 3.7-inch screen completely.

There will a lot of space between the keyboard and the end of the screen. It’s a very disappointing thing about the Lumia 800,it’s because of it’s operating system and if you have big fingers then you will definitely feel bad while typing a message or an email on this device and most of you guys will feel pain in your hands, also you will get irritated.Talking more about this QWERTY keyboard,I’ve found that there is a no space left between each button and it makes the typing task more difficult.Summing this section up,we find that Nokia Lumia 800 is not a good device for typing and we hope that Microsoft will surely do something regarding this issue.

Camera and Speakers:

Nokia Lumia 800 has an eight Megapixel camera present on it’s back. It’s an AutoFocus camera and can shoot 720p HD videos at 30fps.It’s having Carl Zesis optics along with a dual-LED flash present on the back. This eight Megapixel camera can capture rally good quality still images but lags when we talk about it’s image taking speed. The image taking speed is quite slow and just like the messaging, camera app will not use the whole screen, again because of the Windows Mango operating system.

The eight Megapixel camera present on the back of Lumia 800 can shoot good quality videos also and you can add a lot of effects in your video by visiting the settings option. The camera also focuses automatically on anything in the shooting mode and you will not be disappointed by this camera. The dual-LED flash present on the back is quite powerful, with this LED flash you can capture good quality images in a complete dark room.

Most of the smartphones are having the speaker grill on the back of them but Lumia 800 has a different story. The Speaker of Nokia Lumia 800 is present at the at the bottom of the device and the speaker is quite powerful and it provides good quality sounds and music. If you are an ultimate music listener or if you do listen music often, then you will not regret after buying this phone, this phone can play a variety of music files. There’s a little thing missing on this phone, any guess?

There’s no front facing camera present on the Nokia Lumia 800 even it’s a 3G device,it’s one of the most disappointing thing about the Lumia 800 and it’s the only missing thing in the phone.Overall,Nokia Lumia 800 satisfies us in the section.

Browser,Processor and Connectivity features:

Nokia Lumia 800 is running on Microsoft’s Windows operating system then naturally the company is going to deliver their own made web browser.Yes,I’m talking about the Internet Explorer. These a days this operating is lagging and no one is liking this Browser anymore as there are many better browsers present like Chrome.Anyway,IE is the only web browser present in this device,so,you have no option. The Web Browser of Nokia Lumia 800 has also some issues which disappoints us.

When you load a site it opens the site very quickly but after it has opened there are some issues. When you will place your finger to scroll down the screen to see some more content on any website you will find that the kinetic scrolling is smooth but when you scroll there are some blank white spaces created.Similarly, when you zoom in/out you fill face the same problem with the Lumia 800.One good thing about this Web Browser is that the web browser utilizes the full screen and it makes your surfing good and comfortable.

Also,at the bottom there is a search button present and when you will tap that button you will be directly taken to Bing which is Microsoft’s search engine and from their you can search for anything.Nokia Lumia 800 packs a 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon processor along with Adreno 205 GPU.The 1.4GHz processor is quite powerful which is a good thing and you can play good quality games on this device. The device will open an application as soon as you have touched it.

Nokia Lumia 800 is a 3G device and has connectivity features like Bluetooth,Wi-Fi,USB port and a 3.5mm AV jack as well. You have to use a little weird process to open the USB port and the SIM card slot.First of all you have to push the cap underneath which the USB port is present, when you will push that the door will automatically get opened and once, the door is opened you can easily open the second door by pushing it from the left side. When you will push this then you will get a look like this.

Then you can take out the microSIM card tray out and then you can place your SIM card.Nokia Lumia 800 uses the microSIM card and we have checked that all these connectivity features work well.Wrapping this section up we find that the Lumia 800 has some pros and some cons in this section.

Nokia Lumia 800 plays different kind of music and video format like MP3/WAV/eAAC+/WMA player and MP4/H.264/H.263/WMV player respectively. There is also active noise cancellation with dedicated mic included with this phone.A 1450 mAh battery provides power to this phone but the battery life is not very satisfactory, may be brightness is the main cause. It also includes Accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, barometer sensors. The call quality of the phone is good and you will not hear any kind of hollow sound while calling some one.Nokia Lumia 800 is available in Black, Cyan, Magenta, White colors.

The Verdict:

Nokia Lumia 800 is a really good device and summing all these sections up we are giving Nokia Lumia 800 a score of 3.5/5.Nokia Lumia 800 is priced at Rs. 32,ooo /- in India but recently,it’s price is dropped to Rs. 23,000/- here in India. So,if you are looking forward to buy a Windows Phone OS running handset in this price range then do pick it up as it will meet all your demands. So,there you go guys that was the complete review of Nokia Lumia 800,do not forget to check our image gallery below for more images, stay tuned for more tech updates here at Gadgetgyaan.
