Asus Zenfone 5 has high specifications like a 5-inch HD screen, 2GB RAM. It has a nice design while the price of this device is seriously low. Display is quite sharp and the texts are crisp and clear. Dual-SIM support is the cherry on the cake. Camera is really nice and the shutter speed is quite good. Great shakes expected from this camera.
The phone is bigger as compared to the other 5-inch phones but with a non-removable battery. A dual-core processor, not a quad-core. Lag while playing certain high end games. Battery took a little longer to recharge.
The year was kicked off with a bang as the Consumer Electronics Show was there waiting for all the technology freaks to get a look at the 2014 devices. Well, there were many companies and Asus was one of them which was taking away the show with the launch of a few tablets and the Zenfone Series device. Also, the PadFone was there to attract a lot of people all around the globe. There the company announced the Asus Zenfone 4, Zenfone 5 and Zenfone 6 and the numbers at the tail were hinting at the screen size. Today, we have got the Asus Zenfone 5 for review and a few days back we have done the Asus Zenfone 5 Unboxing, so be sure to check that out as well.
The Asus Zenfone 5 is a budget friendly device but is it good enough, to give you and your mind the complete satisfaction to redeem your fulfilled choices? Let’s find out in the full review of this handset.
Design, Display, Touchscreen and Hardware:Asus Zenfone 5 is having a very attractive design which is not having any damped or forced in circular edges at the four corners and finally, we got rid of them as most of the phones come with the round edges. The edges of this device were not too sharp, but those were good. There is a nice bezel running all around the phone and you can see that bezel in the image below. Also, this device is large as compared to other 5-inch smartphones due to it’s specific design which is a bad thing as it is bigger in dimensions and thus, you will get trouble while putting it in your pocket.
“The Phone Never Lagged In Hardware
The Asus Zenfone 5 is having a nice graceful design and users are surely going to say that it looks are more convincing than a budget friendly device have and thus, it will give you more premium feeling. There is no doubt that it is a good smartphone, but still the looks also matter in this race. But for your own use you can have your own mind and selection criteria. It is quite easy to hold this big phone in the hand. On the back panel there is plastic all over and it doesn’t feel quite good.
Asus Zenfone 5 is having a 5.0-inch IPS capacitive touchscreen display which is 1280 x 720 pixels in resolution.and it is providing a pixel density of 294ppi and we are going to be honest with you, the screen is very sharp and the texts are quite crisp on this large display. The device is actually having a a fair amount of ppi and is more on the lower side, but still it is a 720p device with the Corning Gorilla Glass 3 display which is a really fine display and was announced earlier this year.
“The Design Of This Phone Is Awesome, As It’s Different
Yes! The display can be broken but the touchscreen and the inner part will be safe. We have not done the drop test of this device, but we think that this phone can handle damages to some extent as well. This is a IPS HD display and honestly the brightness level of this phone is quite fair, also, if you know Android is the battery sucker, so the lower brightness level will make your battery survive and will give you more time.
The Asus Zenfone 5 is 148.2 x 72.8 x 10.3 mm in dimensions and this device is somewhere in between a thick and thin term. It is a little thicker as compared to to the other devices in this price range, but it’s weight is low as compared to the other phones. It weighs about 145g. The weight of this phone is also okay and we did felt it is kind of a light thing to hold in the hand or to place in the pocket. Well, the phone felt solid in the hand. This device is having the three standard capacitive touch buttons at the bottom end which are the multi-tasking button, the home button and the back button.
This budget friendly smartphone is having all the required ports. There is also a noise cancellation port present on this device as well. Anyway, this phone is having a great touch sensitivity and the touchscreen doesn’t lag anywhere which is going to make many of you guys happy. So, overall this phone is quite good in the terms of hardware, design and display and you can see our ratings above and also hover on the other side to share your ratings too.
OS, Messaging and Connectivity Features:
The Asus Zenfone 5 is running on the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean operating system and this device will receive the Android KitKat update as well. The company has already confirmed about the Android KitKat update so, no worries on the software front. Anyway, if you know the rooting process then you can surely do the rooting of this phone to help yourselves immensely with many things.
“The OS Is Fast, Will Receive The Android KitKat Update
On the software front we did not find any kind of issue and as it is running on Android it is real good as you are going to get as many apps as you want to download from the Google Play Store. Android 4.3, Jelly Bean improves on the speed and simplicity of Android 4.3 and includes all new features – Photo Sphere and a completely redesigned camera app, new Gesture Typing keyboard, Google Now with all new cards, and much more.
Everything in Jelly Bean feels fast, fluid, and smooth. Moving between home screens and switching between apps is effortless, like turning the pages of a book. Jelly Bean improves performance throughout the system, including faster orientation changes, quicker switching between recent apps, and smoother and more consistent rendering across the system through vsync and triple buffering.Jelly Bean has more reactive and uniform touch responses, and makes your Android device even more responsive by boosting your device’s CPU instantly when you touch the screen, and turns it down when you don’t need it to improve battery life. The clock has been totally redesigned with an all new look which includes both a digital and analog clock style. The world clock lets you check the time in different cities right from the Clock app or your lock screen. So, that is all about the Android Jelly Bean operating system and now, let’s move on towards the next thing which is the connectivity feature.
The Asus Zenfone 5 is using the Zen UI and and the User Interface was quite nice. The device is having a big screen so you must have expected that this device is going to bring luxurious typing quality. It is going to withstand on your expectations. If you are having small hands then you can find a little trouble as it is a 5.0-inch display and it will be a bit difficult for those people to type in the landscape mode. So, if you are having small hands better use the portrait mode.
Camera and Processor:
The Asus Zenfone 5 is equipped with an 8-Megapixl AutoFocus camera with the single LED flash and it is capable of shooting Full HD videos as well. This device can shoot in a resolution of 1080p at 30fps, and it also supports AutoFocus. Anyway, moving ahead, on the front of this device there is a 2-Megapixel camera present which is quite useful as it has got the 3G support, so, you can not make the video calling as well.On the other hand, you can use the front camera to set you hair style and see your beautiful face and will really click lot of selfies from it too.
If you want to know more about the camera in detail, then do check out the Review video below where, everything is explained. This device is also packing a dual-core processor. Well, this device packs a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z2560 processor. It is having a 2GB of RAM and we done both benchmark test and gaming test of this smartphone. So, certain high end games didn’t worked properly on the phone. This device has got a nice benchmark score for graphics, but the processor benchmark was okay.
The Asus Zenfone 5 is a good phone giving you a good performance as well. We have also checked that call quality of this phone and we have found it nice, and the person on the other side can hear our voice clearly as well. The internal storage of this device is 8GB and you can expand the external storage upto 64GB via a microSD card as well. This device is also having many other features which includes playing various video and audio formats and much more. Beside that ZenUI was refreshing and they have added so many features that you wouldn’t need any custom ROM for it.
